The Online Teacher Development Platform (OTDP) is an innovative, multi-phase initiative developed by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) to transform and coordinate Continuing Professional Teacher Development (CPTD) across South Africa.

The platform serves as a central hub for educators, provinces, districts, and approved content providers, enabling seamless access to high-quality professional development opportunities. It is designed to address both systemic and individual development needs by offering structured learning pathways, microlearning modules, and integrated reporting systems.

Since its inception, OTDP has evolved significantly:

· Phase One introduced diagnostic tools to assess teachers’ digital competencies and recommend tailored development opportunities.

· Phase Two transitioned into a flexible microlearning platform, allowing teachers to access short, focused learning content anytime, anywhere.

· Phase Three integrated the South African Council for Educators (SACE) system, enabling automatic allocation of CPTD points and enhancing functionality through event management, professional learning communities (PLCs), and course hosting.

Today, OTDP stands as a comprehensive digital ecosystem that supports teacher growth, simplifies administration, and ensures alignment with national professional development standards.

To be a leading, fully integrated digital platform that empowers educators through accessible, relevant, and high-quality professional development, ultimately improving teaching practices and learner outcomes across South Africa.
